Beater is an agricultural production world with a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a balance of available surface water. The system has a population between 1 million and 10 million sophonts. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.

Astrography & Planetology[edit]

Beater is a member of the Spinward Main.

A rich agricultural world located at the intersection of three important trade routes in the Sword Worlds Subsector of the Spinward Marches. Beater has a dense oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere and a tropical climate. This hot and almost soupy atmosphere gave rise to rampant life.

Beater orbits its primary, Gawaine, at a distance of 0.65 AU. Beater has a single moon.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Beater is in a megafaunal stage. Low gravity, high temperatures, lots of oxygen, and no seasons have encouraged the growth of life beyond what is typical. Many planets have periods like this in their histories – Beater just happens to be in one now. [2]

Beater's life forms tend to straddle the line between "plant" and "animal." [2]

  • Aksturen: Can store up solar energy for bursts of speed.
  • Bullvar: The largest land species on the planet, and one of the largest in the sector. Shaped vaguely like an ankylosaur on thick, 10-metre legs.
  • Hjstringstra: Defend themselves with extensible thorns when irritated.
  • Skurgar: The “wolves” of Beater. During the day, a pack of 10 to 20 skurgar hunker down and quietly photosynthesize, unless disturbed. At night, they hunt.

Beater is renowned for its safaris.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The planet's capital city, Kersbog, is located on Tyst Island.

Prior to the Fifth Frontier War, Beater was a member of the Sword Worlds Confederation, but in the aftermath of the war it became part of the Imperial Client state known as the Border Worlds Confederation.

Beater was originally named Galatine. [3]

In 1116 the capital of the Border Worlds was moved from Sting (Spinward Marches 1525) to Beater.

Culture[edit]

Beater offers what many Sword Worlders consider an ideal lifestyle, working small farms that are both profitable and hazardous.

Starport[edit]

The highport at Beater is one of the largest and busiest in the Sword Worlds Confederation. It isn't Class-A as there are no starship yards, but in terms of economic throughput and starship tonnage handled it could be considered equal to such. The port is built as a single unit, a thick disc with protrusions on the upper and lower surfaces. Docking bays circle it, many privately owned or leased by a corporation.

Beater's downport is named Hallenport.
