As the economies of worlds nose-dive deeper into Hard Times, the comparative profitability of plundering increases. This evolution is exacerbated by the dissolution of naval units.
The raiders of Hard Times are not all devolved ex-miliary units; many raiders can trace their origins to traditional pirate bands, organized crime, backgrounds of inhuman poverty and violence, or even mental illness.
It was the starmercs who first divided raiders into three general types.
- Vikings: A large band of well trained, usually ex-military, and well equipped raiders.
- Corsairs: Smaller band of pirates, usually with only one ship. Less disiplined and trained than vikings, but more numerous.
- Rippers: The most dangerous group, a band of murdering sociopaths who kill all they raid or cross their path.
