Orin is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Foralin Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data[edit]

Masia-Orin System[edit]

The primary is Masia, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.048 Sols, a mass of 0.5052 Sols, and a diameter of 769,000 km. (I-I) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, (I-II) an exotic atmosphere radworld, (II) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (III) the Orin Main Belt, designated the mainworld, (IV) a small gas giant, (V) a ringed large gas giant, (VI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VII) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(III) Orin Main Belt[edit]

(III) the Orin Main Belt orbits within the outer system and is designated the mainworld. It lies at a mean distance of 0.66 AU from Masia and is primarily made up of nickel-iron bodies with diameters of less than 50 km. The inner edge of the belt, with a higher concentration of nickel-iron bodies, is considered to lie at around 0.47 AU from the star and the outer edge of the belt, with a higher concentration of icy bodies, is considered to lie at approximately 0.85 AU. The main inhabited body is named Odhran, with a mean orbital distance of 0.53 AU around Masia and an orbital period of 198 days 7 hours. It has a long axis of 320 km, a density of 4.38 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.012 G. It retains no atmosphere and has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: -110°C.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

No information yet available.

World starport[edit]

Orin has a routine quality starport.

  • A Class C Starport Facility has minimal if any shipyards and can only perform extremely limited repair work.
  • This facility has many very skilled personnel who can perform surprisingly sophisticated repair work despite the limited facilities.
  • This facility has refueling infrastructure and limited refining capabilities. One may purchase unrefined fuel here.
  • Starports of this class rarely have both a Lowport and a Highport.

World technology level[edit]

Orin possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government[edit]

Orin has a Feudal Technocracy government.

  • It is a government by specific individuals for those who agree to be ruled. Relationships are based on the performance of technical activities which are mutually-beneficial.
  • The typical power source of this government is an Oligarchy.
  • The typical power structure of this government is a Hegemony.

World culture[edit]

Several different clans of miners grew from the original settlers' family groupings. These clans bid every four years on the contracts to run various aspects of the economy. Votes of clan members decide what controlling interest is seen as best for clan interests and economic viability. Leaders who cost the clans money with poor administration of clan resources are quickly replaced prior to the next cycle of bidding. Neutral arbiters form a council from the clan-less to settle disputes and decide legal issues. All bids go public across the system, quotas and ore prices are adjusted in real time as the issue is decided. Once time is up, after one standard day, the highest bid for each economic power block and civil responsibility is decided and contracts are finalized for the next four years. Clan population and tonnage of prospecting vessels are taken into account for proportional representation. Most large refineries and ore processors are held collectively with several clans having a percentage of ownership and a percent of revenue after operating expenses are paid.

Once the nursery born from the GenPods arrived, they were accepted into existing clans, looking for genetic diversity and stable breeding populations. Nursery rocks, creche or cradle sites were built deep in the biggest rocks in the system for the maximum protection from radiation possible. Extensive security monitoring and automated defense networks keep these sites well defended. Hopper brood mothers are the only ones trusted with their locations, and they are sworn to die rather than reveal where they are located. To this day these locations and access points are the most closely guarded secrets. "Adult" belters arrive at their work site for training at age 14 having mastered the basics of vacuum suit operations. The new recruits are carefully looked after for the first four years, after that, survival is anyone's guess.
