Hudmill is a low-population water world, which has 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water and a population of less than 10,000 sophonts.

Description (Planetology)[edit]

Naval and Scout facilities are split between orbital bases around Hudmill and a few low-lying islands in the temperate zone of the surface. The few permanent residents are mostly retired officers and their families who decided to occupy one of the islands the Navy wasn't using. Climate and lifestyle here are reminiscent of Polynesia on Terra, but civilian offworlders are not encouraged to stay.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

A low population water world in the Ch'naar Subsector of the Core Sector.

Local legends tell that long ago an obsolete TL–E Regal Class Battle Cruiser was pulled from frontier duty and used for reinforcement during the darker days of the empire. It was badly damaged and managed to limp here after a particularly savage battle for the core between loyal and 'rebel' forces. The admiral in charge of the local fleet knew the ship could not be salvaged.

The jump drive had exploded upon return to normal space and wiped out most of engineering following its final fatal misjump. Written off as a complete lost, he arranged the paperwork so that no one noticed the main weapon array going missing from the radioactive hulk. He quietly had the factor S spinal mount meson gun recovered and flown to the surface. He hid the reassembled weapon in a deep site on the floor of the ocean. The work was done by a local deep sea mining company. The CEO owed him some favors. The company used imported advanced robots for the deep, high pressure work.

In return for access to local mineral resources it was arranged that some of the massive deep sea robots remain there to this day, maintaining the deep well weapon system, they helped reassemble and install. A distributed network of well camouflaged remote surface and orbital sensors is used to provide accurate fire control as well as local weather, surf reports and communication links. When the admiral retired to this world he used his influence to keep a group of well trained naval reservists with him. They are more than capable of maintaining and operating this massive weapon, despite the local technology level.

There is a distributed network of computer nodes that functions as a model 8 fib when the cluster is up and running. This was justified as a redundant traffic control system for the starport. Any aggressors toward this quiet retirement community are in for a rude shock, as the advanced weapon is all aspect, because the bulk of the planet is transparent to the deadly meson beams.
