The star Algol (also variously known as Beta Persei, Gorgona, or the Demon Star) is a quinary star system that lends its name to the class of eclipsing variables known as Algol variables.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Algol star system is in fact a quinary star system composed of a triple system (Algol A) orbited by an additional two stars, Algol B and Algol C.

  • Algol A is itself a triple-star system composed of a close orbiting binary pair (Algol Aa1 & Algol Aa2) separated by only 0.062 AUs and orbiting each other in a little under 3 days. This binary pair is further orbited by a companion star (Algol Ab) at a distance of 2.69 AUs. The orbital period of Algol Ab about the Algol Aa pair is 681 days.
  • An additional two very faint stars (Algol B and Algol C) orbit the Algol A trinary system at a much further distance.
  • A further five stars are also often considered associated companions of the quinary system as a whole.
  • The Algol system is known for X-Ray and radio-wave flares.

The Algol star system lies approximately 27.6pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimspinward/Spinward direction from Terra at bearing 149.0o Galactic Longitude and -14.9o South Galactic Latitude.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Algol is the primary star of the world Algol/Star Bridge (Aldebaran 0112).
